“APHRODITE'S WATER"
GIROLAMO CIULLA’S FOUNTAIN
FOR PIETRASANTA

“L'acqua di Afrodite” (The Water of Aphrodite), based on a 1994 sketch, is an 8-meter-wide fountain depicting Aphrodite as she emerges from the water’s edge. Hieratic and immersed in an ecstasy of life, she is captured at the exact moment of Girolamo Ciulla’s sculptural vision. The goddess of beauty, love, and procreation is born mysteriously from the sea foam, beginning her journey into myth.

Sculpted from travertine, she rises from the waters to protect and honor the creative vibrancy typical of the people of Pietrasanta—skilled sculptors, artisans, scientists, and great poets. Originally from Sicily—where ancient myths still echo through his work—Ciulla chose to settle in this Tuscan town, situated directly at the "source of the marble."

With the installation of this imposing travertine sculpture-fountain, crafted in the workshops of the "Little Athens" by the Sicilian master, the space takes on a new life as a hub for community and social gathering. The work stands not only as a prime example of the sculptor's poetics but also demonstrates how art serves as a powerful tool for urban regeneration.
