VEERMAN MARISA

Marisa Veerman (b. 1977) is a contemporary Australian artist who lives and works in Brisbane. Her artistic practice arises from the poetic union of photography and embroidery, stemming from a reflection on themes of emotion, childhood, and the preciousness of the human soul.
With a professional background in textile visual merchandising, Marisa worked for years for renowned fabric brands. This experience profoundly influenced her artistic vision, leading her to spontaneously fuse photography with the textile world.
"In a world that often appears transient and in constant flux, I find myself returning to the quiet constancy of connection, to those enduring relationships with family and close friends that reappear, again and again, along the path of my life. Side by Side is a celebration of these anchors, of the people who walk with us, sometimes near, sometimes far, but always present in the rhythm of our days. Through my work, I seek to capture the gentle reassurance that arises from these relationships. Whether it is a holiday gathering, a spontaneous visit, or a simple shared moment, these encounters offer a sense of peace and belonging that is both comforting and essential. They are landmarks that help us navigate life’s uncertainties, offering stability and warmth even as the world around us changes."
In her works, Marisa sets the stage with models, costumes, and long exposure times, achieving images of a melancholic and ethereal beauty. The embroidery and beadwork that embellish the photographic surface add a tactile and material dimension to the work. A light layer of varnish completes the process, binding the various elements into a visual result on the border between painting and photography.
Marisa Veerman has exhibited in numerous exhibitions across Australia, the United States, and Denmark, earning prestigious awards and recognition, including the 2019 Rotary Art Award for mixed media and the 2024 Clayton Utz Art Award.
